Western Sydney punk trio So I Says to Mabel return with energetic and bouncy follow up to debut album Make Punk Great Again.
You Always Wanted This leans heavily into their pop-punk influences, with the first five songs setting a ruthlessly fast pace that almost leaves the listener gasping for breath. And in true SISTM fashion, bass is again at the forefront of their songs, leading with intricate riffs that set them apart from their peers.
Picking up where MPGA left off, YAWT opens with the frustrated but introspective “This Shit is Outta Hand” - a call and response track that grapples with war, violence, and the competitive nature of humans. And although there are many themes of discontent through the album, YAWT includes two of the happiest songs the band have ever written – “You're An Optimal Human Being” and “Can You Hold my Banana”.
The most surprising track of the album, however, is “Matilda”. Inspired by the tragic 2025 Bondi shootings, it is laced with vulnerability and is SISTM at their rawest, opening with nothing but a lone guitar and breathy, fragile vocals.
YAWT is a nod to the skate punk era of the late 90s, and whilst it wears it's influences on its sleeve (Blink 182, The Living End, Suicidal Tendencies, NOFX, New Found Glory), it has its own feel - the SISTM feel.
You Always Wanted This is being jointly released by Pee Records (AU), Cat’s Claw Records (UK), and Double Felix Records (USA).
